Hot Dog and Bamboo Shoots

Mrs. Andrew and Mrs. Chaney's 6th grade students read the story Hot Dog and Bamboo Shoots by Yoshiko Uchida this week. The story was a true account of the author's young life.  Yoshiko grew up in the U.S. and went to Japan in 1934 to visit her grandmother.
The story told about Yoshiko's family celebrating a traditional Japanese New Year. They had a feast consisting of broiled lobster, sesame daikon salad, herring roe, knotted seaweed, teriyaki chicken, bamboo shoots, rice, miso soup, sushi, and other dishes.
The 6th grade students had their own Japanese feast in order to experience some of the Japanese culture.  They each got to try sushi, bamboo shoots, chicken rice, chicken teriyaki, Sapporo Ichiban (Japanese style noodles), and Miso soup.  They ate their meal using chop sticks.  Some of the food they didn't really like, but others they did.  We all agreed that we are not big fans of sushi. Check out Mrs. Chaney, Mrs. Andrew, Mrs. Armitage, and Mr. Johnson as they chomp into some sushi. Mr. Johnson was the only one that thought it was decent.
